A Garden Update. Plus, Coping In The Heat
High temperatures are not easy to cope with, whether you are human, an amimal, or a plant. Personally, I'm more of an autumn and winter person. Bookworm weather!
Also, where we live, you can still grow plenty of veg and other plants in winter. I have been growing as much as I can so far this summer, with the help of some shade, but because January and February here get extremely hot and dry, I am planning to have a rest time for myself and for the garden over this period. I'll let anything that's happy to carry on live out its life, and any fruit will be left to ripen. But I plan to harvest all of my swiss chard and freeze it for later use.
I also plan to feed and mulch my containers and vegetable bed well in preparation for spring. I'm also thinking about planting some succulents like bulbinella in the open spaces to serve as a hardy cover crop. These are easy to pull up and transplant.
The garden slows down in the hot months, yet it is still and important preparation time.
On the personal side, my family and I have been sailing some rough seas lately. I've been feeling the need to just slow right down and draw closer to Jesus.
The challenging, tough time in my garden echoes the other struggles we are going through. Daily, I need to remember that God is with us in this season too, and that He will never fail us.
So, I am entrusting everything, including my garden to Him. It will bloom again.
