A Little Update, And Welcome

A Little Update, And Welcome

I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome each new visitor to my small blog. Thanks so much for popping in. :)

Here in South Africa, we are in the middle of Summer, and just entering the hottest time of year.

Part of the garden has been put to bed

The sun is doing a great job of ripening my cherry tomatoes, and my egg plants seem happy. (I now have three growing on one plant.)

I am feeding my plants regularly with my homemade plant soup, and I am giving deep waterings every second day.

Today, I was working in what I call my summer garden. It is the part of my garden lightly shaded by pomegranate trees and a guava tree.

The pomegranates will begin to ripen

I had previously propagated some pepper plants, and these needed new homes as they were in small pots. I was a bit nervous due to the heat, but they seem to be happy already and are quite protected. I rigged up an impromptu awning for the green peppers as their barrel is in a more sunny position. I also mulched all of the transplants with grass clippings and watered them well. In the evening, I checked up on them and gave them a light misting of water.

These lettuce plants may or may not manage the heat

What I have discovered since I've been gardening in the shade, is that it's very easy to over water, and I have to remind myself to feel the soil. I've also had to shift containers around to where the shade is lighter, as even though it's hot, plants still need plenty of light. It's been a learning experience:)

I also transplanted some alyssum and marigold plants. Hopefully, they will also be happier in their more roomy homes.

Are you also trying out gardening in the shade? Or are you wishing it was spring already?

In case you don't know about it, I have another blog, where I share inspirational stories and poems. I have also published a few books. Also, you will find a new free to read selection of poetry called "Hope Blooms" on the blog. Several of the poems are inspired by my garden.

That's all for now. Happy gardening or garden planning.

Love and prayers,
Alison
